Joseph George Lucchesi (pronounced loo-kay-see; born June 6, 1993) is a Major League Baseball pitcher for the New York Mets (MLB). In 2018, he made his Major League Baseball debut with the San Diego Padres.
Lucchesi was traded to the New York Mets on January 19, 2021, as part of a three-team deal that sent Joe Musgrove to the Padres and David Bednar, Omar Cruz, Drake Fellows, Hudson Head, and Endy Rodriguez to the Pittsburgh Pirates.
On June 21, Lucchesi was diagnosed with “severe” ulnar collateral ligament damage in his left elbow. Following a diagnosis of a complete tear of the ligament, it was confirmed that Lucchesi will have Tommy John surgery, therefore terminating his 2021 season.
Lucchesi made his major league debut on March 30, 2018, against the Milwaukee Brewers at Petco Park, becoming the first pitcher from the 2016 draft to reach the majors and the second player overall after Austin Hays.
He began the game and threw 423 innings, allowing three earned runs on seven hits, and struck out one as the Brewers upset the Padres 8–6.
Lucchesi went on the injured list for a month in late May and early June due to a right hip strain, but he was otherwise a regular member of the Padres’ rotation.
