English professor, sports pundit, and reporter Richard John Gwynne (23 April 1945 – 9 July 2022) died on that date.
In 1957, he relocated to Manchester from Shropshire, where he was born in 1945. As a student at Chorlton Grammar School, he later entered the teaching profession. At Moston Brook High School in Manchester, where he also served as Deputy Housemaster (Fisher), he taught English.
In Greater Manchester, his son Andrew is the Labour representative for Denton and Reddish.
His love for Manchester City F.C. spanned his entire life. On July 9, 2022, at the age of 77, he passed away from cancer.
In Manchester, Gwynne first had a position as a teacher. A speaker and toastmaster for after-dinner events, Gwynne. In the Manchester region, he also organized regional darts competitions and served as the MC for darts exhibitions.
He has been the announcer for the Lancashire County Cricket Club since the 2019 season began.
He penned “The Mancunian Way,” a monthly column, for Darts World Magazine (formerly known as Piccadilly Line), for 31 years.
At one point, he also “ghost authored” Wayne Mardle’s column, Wayne’s World, in the same publication. He spent over 30 years writing about regional darts for the North West area’s newspapers. 2011 saw him giving up on both.
In order to rescue the log-end dartboard from extinction, he formed the Manchester Log-End Federation and served as chairman of both organizations.
In his capacity as a pundit for the Six-a-Side World Cup competitions of the International Socca Federation.
He released his autobiography, “Soccer Satisfied,” in September 2020 in collaboration with David Mitchell and with a preface by Jeff Stelling.
