Jonathan Waters, Mark Rylance’s brother, perished in a bike accident. He was 60 years old at the time. Last week, the Dunkirk star’s brother was riding in Oakland when he was apparently hit by a car and sustained serious head injuries.
Rylance, who is presently acting in the West End, released a statement confirming his brother’s death. “I am deeply sorry to inform you that on May 28th, my darling brother Jonathan Waters was sadly killed after being knocked off his bicycle,” he stated.
“Unfortunately, I will have to miss three performances of Jerusalem between the 11th and 12th of June in order to attend his funeral in California.
Jerusalem is a drama by Jez Butterworth that premiered at the Royal Court Theatre’s Jerwood Theatre in London. Johnny “Rooster” Byron is played by Rylance, and Ginger is played by Mackenzie Crook.
“Unfortunately, these performances have been cancelled because I have no understudy to assume the character of Rooster Johnny Byron,” Rylance added.
“I hope you understand my need to grieve my darling brother and thank you for your support at this difficult time,” he continued. I hope you will be able to see another Jerusalem performance.”
Waters lived in Berkeley, California, and worked at Chez Panisse, one of Berkeley’s most recognized restaurants. Susannah, his and Rylance’s sister, also paid tribute to him on Instagram, writing: “On Saturday we lost my darling brother.
Seeing the reactions as the news spreads allows you to see why so many people loved him and said he transformed their lives.
“Along with the rest of my family, which I am incredibly fortunate to have.” I’m at a loss. I’ve lost a significant portion of me. She wrote, “I’m dehydrated from crying.”
