Businessman Jorge León “Nene” Araneta is well-known in the Philippines. He is the chairman of the Araneta Group of Companies, which is involved in the development of real estate, lodging and hospitality, dining and food service, entertainment and leisure, and beauty and philanthropy.

He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA) from the University of the Philippines Diliman, where he was a member of the Upsilon Sigma Phi fraternity, and attended De La Salle University in Manila. He worked closely with his father during his adolescent years after graduating from college, and he progressively ascended through the ranks of the family firm until, in 1970, he seized control of the Araneta Group and its associated enterprises after his father retired.

Under his leadership, the family business was further expanded to include real estate, agriculture, investments, and food and dining services. As a result, the country experienced many firsts, including the creation of the Fiesta Carnival in 1971, the Ali Mall in 1976, which was the nation’s first indoor enclosed mall, and numerous commercial buildings throughout the 1980s.

After his father passed away in 1985, Araneta received his father’s money. Araneta took on the responsibility of carrying out his father’s vision by initiating the planning of the Araneta Center Redevelopment Plan in 1999–2000 and the program’s implementation in 2002. Araneta saw the opportunity to transform the Araneta Center into a transit-oriented development with a garden city concept.
