When Juan Lagares was sidelined for 79 games in 2016, after playing more than 100 games in his first three seasons, he began to suffer from a series of injuries.
After losing his starting position, he had a .239 batting average with three home runs and nine runs batted in. In 2017, he appeared in 94 games, but only started 58 times in center field the most of any player on the club.
He continued to struggle at the bats, batting.250 with three home runs and 15 RBIs, with an OPS+ of 75 – the lowest of his career.
The only thing keeping him in the majors despite his poor offensive numbers was his outstanding defense.
It looked like he was going to have another great year in 2018, as he hit .339 in his first 30 games, but an injury on May 16th to his foot after colliding with the outfield fence tore a ligament, and it was reported a couple of days later that his season was finished.
He was the Mets’ most-used center fielder in 2019, but his OPS+ dipped to a new low of 62 while he batted only .213/.279/.326.
In winter ball, he had a resurgence with the Cibaeas, hitting .337/.373/.404. He would have finished third in the Dominican Winter League in batting average if he had qualified (behind Moises Sierra and Jordany Valdespin).
Only two games were played for the Mets in 2020, with Brandon Nimmo taking over the center field position and him not batting.
