Judy Tenuta was an American comedian, actress, and comedy musician. She was known for her whimsical and brash persona of “The Love Goddess,” mixing insult comedy, observational humor, self-promotion, and bawdy onstage antics.
In the late 1970s, Tenuta launched her stand-up comedy career in Chicago by appearing in openers and other small-time shows on the city’s comedy circuit.
Tenuta surprised spectators during her debut performance by dressing up as the Virgin Mary. After receiving encouragement from her friends to include an accordion in her routine, she continued to build the character into her legendary identity as the wisecracking “Love Goddess.”
Tenuta left Chicago in the late 1980s and moved to New York City to host an HBO Comedy Special with Ellen DeGeneres, Rita Rudner, and Paula Poundstone.
Prior to this, Tenuta had garnered a fiery reputation as one of the “hottest young comics around,” and he moved to New York because of this opportunity.
