Layne attended Benedictine High School in Cleveland, Ohio. There, Layne faced off against current NFL linebacker Jerome Baker. He played cornerback and wide receiver in high school.

He made the decision to enlist in football at Michigan State University. Layne started his first season at Michigan State in 2016 as a wide receiver but was converted to a cornerback before the fifth game of the year.

The Steelers placed Layne on the reserve/COVID-19 list on July 29, 2020. He entered service on August 11, 2020. He took part in all 16 of the Steelers’ games, making a total of 22 tackles.
On August 30, 2022, the Steelers released him.
