Keegan Thompson Minor Career

Cullman High School in Cullman, Alabama was Thompson’s collegiate alma mater.

He was named Alabama’s Gatorade Player of the Year as a sophomore in 2011 after a 9–2 record and a 1.70 ERA with 17 home runs and 66 RBIs as well as a .433 batting average.

It was his second time winning the honor, this time as a senior in 2013, after going 9-2 and having an earned run average of 1.25, striking out 124 hitters in 72+23 innings of work and batting .420 with nine home runs and 43 RBIs.

Having been overlooked by professional baseball teams after high school, he attended Auburn University and played baseball for the Auburn Tigers.

Thompson was a member of the SEC All-Freshman Team as a freshman for the Tigers in 2014, when he appeared in 14 games and had a 5-3 record with a 2.01 ERA.

The season was cut short due to elbow problems, but his record was still 7-3 with a 3.10 ERA after he pitched in 12 games (11 starts).

In June of 2015, he underwent Tommy John surgery and missed the whole 2016 season as a result.

He was picked by the Detroit Tigers in the 33rd round of the 2016 MLB draft, despite not pitching in 2016, but he did not sign.

In 2017, he returned to Auburn as a redshirt junior and made 15 starts, going 7–4 with a 2.41 ERA.
