Kofi Cockburn was born and raised in Kingston in Jamaica on September 1, 1999. He grew up playing various sports such as soccer, and cricket, and he ran track and field too in Jamaica. He has a height of 2.13m tall with a weight of 136 kg.
Kofi’s parents are Dorothy Wray, his mother and Laffitte Cockburn, his father. Kofi permanently relocated to America in 2014 to live with his mother who was already settled in New York and working.
Kofi played basketball at Christ the King Regional High School in Middle Village, New York. He also played Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) basketball for the New York (NY) Rens as a junior in high school and then as a senior, he got transferred to Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson, Virginia.
Whiles at Oak Hill Academy, he received 26 scholarship offers from universities and colleges in the USA. He picked his top 12 schools out of the 26 among which included Illinois University.
Due to the kind of acquaintance he had with the Illinois assistant coach, Orlando Antigua and the rest of the Illinois coaching staff, he decided to go for Illinois.
