Major League Baseball’s Eastern Division often referred to as the AL East is one of six divisions (MLB). Each of MLB’s two 15-team leagues, the American League (AL) and National League (NL), has an East, Central, and West division (NL).
A new division, the American League East, was formed prior to the start of the 1969 season. Before then, there were no divisions in the leagues; they were all made up of the same 10 clubs.
The Yankees have won 19 AL East division championships, 40 AL pennants, and 27 World Series triumphs — all of which are MLB records — making them the most successful professional sports club in the United States.
After trailing the NHL’s Montreal Canadiens by one or two championships in the 1990s, the team has now won more championships than any other franchise in the four major North American sports leagues.
