Mary Elizabeth Truss is the New Prime Minister for the United Kingdom. She is a British politician who has served as Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Affairs since 2021 and Minister for Women and Equalities since 2019. She has been the representative for South West Norfolk since 2010 and is a Conservative.
She attended Merton College in Oxford and served as president of the Oxford University Liberal Democrats. In 1996, she received her degree and enrolled in the Conservative Party. She won the South West Norfolk seat in the 2010 general election. As a backbencher, she pushed for reform in a number of policy areas, such as childcare, math instruction, and the economy. She founded the Conservative MPs’ Free Enterprise Group and published a number of papers.
After the 2017 presidential election, she was chosen to hold the position of chief secretary of the Treasury. She praised Johnson’s ambition to lead the Conservatives after May announced her resignation in 2019. He appointed her to the posts of Secretary of State for International Trade and President of the Board of Trade. She added the title of Minister for Women and Equalities to her resume in September 2019.
She moved from the Department of International Trade to the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Affairs during the 2021 cabinet shuffle. She was appointed the government’s chief negotiator with the EU and UK chair of the EU-UK Partnership Council in December 2021.
