Venezuelan professional baseball infielder Luis Jose Rengifo, born on February 26, 1997, plays for the Los Angeles Angels of Major League Baseball (MLB). He debuted in MLB in 2019.
In March 2014, Rengifo agreed to a contract with the Seattle Mariners as an unrestricted foreign free agent.
In 64 games, he batted.198 with one home run and 20 RBIs to make his professional debut that year for the Venezuelan Summer League Mariners.
In 60 games in 2015 with the Dominican Summer League Mariners, he batted.336/.405/.465 with two home runs, 35 RBIs, and 19 stolen bases. In 34 games in 2016 with the Mariners of the Arizona League, he hit.239, and he began 2017 with the Clinton LumberKings.
After the 2018 campaign, the Angels added Rengifo to their 40-man roster.
He returned to Salt Lake to start the new year.
He was promoted to the major league roster on April 25 and made his major league debut that night. In 108 games, he hit.238 with seven home runs and 33 RBIs.
Early in 2020, a deal to send Rengifo to the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for Joc Pederson and Ross Stripling almost materialized.
As the Angels’ second baseman to start the season, Rengifo underperformed and was demoted. He played in 33 games, averaging.156.
