Lucas Daniel Williams, born August 9, 1996, is an American Major League Baseball utility player for the San Francisco Giants (MLB). He made his Major League Baseball debut in 2021 with the Philadelphia Phillies.
Williams grew up in Orange County, California after being born in Park Ridge, Illinois. He attended Dana Hills High School, where he participated in baseball, football, and track and field.
Williams stole 26 bases in his junior season, breaking the Dana Hills school record. As a senior, he batted.315 with a.454 on-base percentage while scoring 35 runs, driving in 19 runs, and hitting four home runs.
Prior to getting picked, Williams had committed to play collegiate baseball at California Polytechnic State University over offers from UCLA California and Irvine.
Williams is a utility player who enjoys playing in a number of positions, making him a valuable bench player for the Philadelphia Phillies.
After realizing that Ben Zobrist spent 14 years in MLB playing whatever position was requested of him, he was motivated to take on a “super-utility” role.
Williams’ flexibility on defense, as well as his speed, has earned him praise from former Los Angeles Angels manager Mike Scioscia, who penned a scouting report praising Williams’ ability to “run and do a lot of different things.”
