Vorontsova is the eldest daughter of Vladimir Putin and Lyudmila Putina and was born in Leningrad, now Saint Petersburg, Russia.
During the 1980s, she attended a German school in Dresden, East Germany, where her family lived. She attended Peterschule, a German gymnasium in St. Petersburg after her family moved there in the spring of 1991.
She and her sister Katerina were later sent to Germany by their father, who feared for their safety, during violent gang wars involving the Tambov Gang as it took control of St. Petersburg’s energy trade.
Their legal guardian was former Stasi Matthias Warnig, who had worked with their father in Dresden as part of a KGB cell and founded the Dresdner Bank branch in St Petersburg.
In 1995, she performed on the violin for a diplomatic breakfast sponsored by the Russian Consulate General in Hamburg.
After her family relocated to Moscow, she attended the German School Moscow, a school for diplomat’s children run by the German Embassy in Moscow, which had many students from Switzerland, Austria, and Germany.
After 11 years of schooling, she received her diploma. Three years later, she began her university studies, enrolling as a first-year student with Katerina.
