The body of an Austrian climber who was last heard from a week ago has been found on the slopes of Alaska’s Mount Denali, last Friday.

He was found after an aerial search and spotted the body in the fall zone below Denali Pass. His body has not yet been recovered, as authorities will rely on a ranger patrol that’s adapted to high altitude to facilitate the effort.

Matthias Rimml Obituary

Matthias Rimml was a professional mountain guide from Austria with years of climbing experience. The 35-year-old was alone and was the first registered climber this season to attempt climbing the 20,310-foot peak, the tallest in North America. His friend had been receiving periodic check-in calls from Rimml, but when the calls stopped, he grew concerned and notified Denali mountaineering rangers on the afternoon of May 3.

Matthias Rimml Cause Of Death

The real cause of Matthias Rimml is not yet known as his body is yet to be recovered for further investigation. Officials say Mountain rangers are going to be the team to recover the body since the mountain is really high. His friend and fellow climbing partner Andy Huetten strongly believe his death is likely to be due to an accident as he describes Matthias as an excellent climber. Matthias had submitted various mountains including the tallest mountain in Africa, Kilimanjaro.

Matthias Rimml Tributes

Andy Huetten says “He was a lovely person, a wonderful partner, and (an) excellent mountaineer,” Huetten said. “Nature showed us how small we are, that’s all. You always have to be aware of that, that we’re just a little piece of the puzzle. That’s a whole thing. It’s very tragic.”

More tributes are expected to pour in from family, friends and loved ones as this news is sudden and tragic.

Funeral of Matthias Rimml

The funeral of the late professional climber is yet to be announced to the public. The funeral shall be announced hopefully once the climber’s body is retrieved by the mountain rangers and further investigations are done.
