To celebrate their Lookouts’ Southern League title win on September 21, 2015, Minnesota called up pitcher Max Kepler to the majors.
On September 27, 2015, he made his major league debut and recorded his first hit. Kepler is the second German-born MLB player in the modern era, the first being Donald Lutz.
The Minnesota Twins sent Kepler to the Class AAA International League’s Rochester Red Wings for the start of the 2016 season. On April 10, 2016, the Minnesota Twins promoted him from Rochester to the big leagues to replace the ailing Danny Santana.
When Kepler’s contract expired, he was sent to Rochester. Recalled from the minors on June 1, 2016, Kepler was thrust into the starting lineup to replace the injured Miguel Sano.
With a three-run walk-off home run in the 10th inning against Matt Barnes of the Boston Red Sox on June 12, Kepler hit his first major league home run.
As of August 1, Kepler became the first European-born MLB player to hit three home runs in a single game and the fifth Minnesota Twins player to accomplish so following Bob Allison, Harmon Killebrew, Tony Oliva and Justin Morneau before him.
This is the first time that Kepler has been chosen American League Player of the Week, and he shared the distinction with teammate Joe Mauer.
Against the Kansas City Royals on Opening Day 2017, Kepler had a hit in his first at-bat. On August 31, Kepler faced the Chicago White Sox with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning.
He became only the second player in Twins history to be hit by a walk-off pitch when Juan Minaya delivered a slider inside and Kepler was struck by the ball.
It was the 20th win of the month for the Twins. Among his many career highs, Kepler’s were his 147 games played, his batting average of .243, hit0 19 home runs, and his 69 RBIs. On the season, Kepler smashed 20 home runs with 58 RBIs in just over 150 at-bats.
His 156 games played and 20 home runs were career highs for him.
