Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed was the President of the United Arab Emirates, the Emir of Abu Dhabi, and the supreme commander of the United Arab Emirates Armed Forces from 2004 to 2022.
Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the eldest son of Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, was born on September 7, 1948, in Al Ain, Abu Dhabi (then part of the Trucial States). At Sandhurst, he earned his degree from the Royal Military College of Scotland.
Khalifa was named Ruler’s Representative (the mayor) in the Eastern Region of Abu Dhabi and head of the Courts Department in Al Ain when his father, Zayed, became Emir of Abu Dhabi in 1966.
When Zayed was not Emir of Abu Dhabi, he served as the Ruler’s Representative in the East. He was replaced by Tahnoun bin Mohammed Al Nahyan a few months later.
Khalifa was named Abu Dhabi’s Crown Prince on February 1, 1969, and the following day he was named head of the Abu Dhabi Defense Department.
After 1971, the Abu Dhabi Defense Force became the core of the UAE Armed Forces under his leadership.
A number of roles became available for Khalifa in Abu Dhabi after the United Arab Emirate was established in 1971. These included the prime minister, chairman of the Abu Dhabi Cabinet, defense minister, and finance minister.
