Michael Purcell plays nose tackle in professional football for the Denver Broncos of the National Football League. He is 1.91 m tall and weighs 149 kg. He played high school football while attending Highlands Ranch High School. Following high school, he enrolled at the University of Wyoming, where he played NCAA football for the Wyoming Cowboys.
He played 42 games over the course of his four-year career, recording 197 tackles, four sacks, three forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries. As a senior, he made 83 tackles, 1.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, and was named to the first team of the Mountain West Conference. Purcell was chosen by the San Francisco 49ers as an undrafted free agent in May 2013.
By May 2017, the Los Angeles Rams have taken him off waivers. The Chicago Bears added him to their practice squad on September 19 after he was released on September 2. The Carolina Panthers added Purcell to the practice squad in October 2017, but he was dismissed the following month. He joined the New England Patriots practice squad on October 25, 2017, but was later let go.
He was a practice squad addition for the Kansas City Chiefs in November 2017. Purcell will join the Alliance of American Football in 2019 and play for the Salt Lake Stallions. The Denver Broncos acquired Purcell in April 2019. A three-year, $14.8 million deal with the Broncos was inked by him in October 2020.
