On July 30th, the Astros made a surprising trade, sending him to the Cleveland Indians in exchange for middle reliever Phil Maton and minor leaguer Yainer Diaz.

He hit.285 with an OPS+ of 104 in 60 games for Cleveland, but the Astros had replacements in rookies Chas McCormick and Jake Meyer, and they had few internal choices to shore up their bullpen.

The Astros made it to the World Series while he was away, and he paid them a private visit.

Straw was traded to the Cleveland Indians for Phil Maton and Yainer Diaz on July 30, 2021.  Straw batted at the end of the 2021 season.

Between the Astros and Indians, they hit 271/.349/.348 with four home runs, 48 RBIs, and 30 stolen bases.

Straw signed a five-year, $25 million deal with the Guardians on April 9, 2022.

In his two-month tenure with Cleveland last season, the 27-year-old Straw batted.285 with two home runs and 13 steals. He did, however, show enough to convince the club that he is worth a long-term investment.

Straw’s contract includes escalators that could make it worth $43.5 million over seven seasons. It takes the place of a one-year deal with a major league salary of $719,900.
