Born on July 1, 1980, in Las Matas de Santa Cruz, Dominican Republic, Nelson Cruz is a Dominican-American professional baseball designated hitter and right fielder. His full name is Nelson Ramon Cruz Martinez Jr. He is now a Major League Baseball player for the Washington Nationals, but he has also been linked to the Milwaukee Brewers, Texas Rangers, Baltimore Orioles, Seattle Mariners, Minnesota Twins, and Tampa Bay Rays in the past.
He began his professional career with the New York Mets on February 17, 1998. He signed with them as a non-drafted free agent. He was known to play in the Dominican Summer League for three years. He also played for the Rangers in the World Series in the years 2010 and 2011 where he earned the name The Most Valuable Player in the 2011 American League Championship Series.
