Ons Jabeur is a professional Tunisian tennis player. The Women’s Tennis Association placed her as high as No. 2 in the world on 27 June 2022.
Jabeur is the top-ranked Tunisian tennis player and the highest-ranked African and Arab player in the history of the ATP and WTA rankings.
She has won 11 singles championships and one doubles title on the ITF Women’s Circuit.
Her mother originally introduced Jabeur to tennis at age three. In 2010 and 2011, she won the French Open junior girls’ singles championship.
She was the first Arab player to win a junior Grand Slam singles championship since 1964, when Ismail El Shafei won Wimbledon’s boys’ title.
Jabeur began participating more frequently on the WTA Tour in 2017 after competing primarily on the ITF Tour for over a decade. She earned the award for Arab Woman of the Year in 2019.
At the Australian Open in 2020, Jabeur became the first Arab woman to reach the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam tournament, a record she duplicated at the Wimbledon Championships in 2021.
She became the first Arab woman to win a WTA Tour championship when she won the Birmingham Classic in 2021. She became the first African or Arab player to win a title at this level at the 2022 Madrid Open, a WTA 1000 tournament.
