Penny Marshall, actual name Carole Penny Marshall, was a well-known American actress, director, and producer. Her portrayal of Laverne DeFazio on the television sitcom Laverne & Shirley, for which she was best known, earned her three nominations for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Television Series Musical or Comedy.
Penny was born in the United States on October 15, 1943, in The Bronx, New York. She died on December 17, 2018, in Hollywood Hills, Los Angeles, California, at the age of 75. The three leading causes of death were a cardiopulmonary failure, atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, and type 1 diabetes.
Penny made her directing debut in 1986 with Jumpin’ Jack Flash. She directed Big in 1988 as well. Big created box office history by becoming the first film directed by a woman to surpass $100 million in the United States. She got numerous accolades for the previous movies she directed. Her 1990 film Awakenings was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture.
