John Peter Ricketts was born on August 19, 1964, in Nebraska City, the oldest of four children to Joe Ricketts and Marlene (Volkmer) Ricketts. Later, the family relocated to Omaha.
Joe Ricketts created First Omaha Securities in 1975, making it one of the country’s first inexpensive stockbrokers. It thrived, renaming itself Ameritrade, becoming public in 1997, and renaming itself TD Ameritrade after purchasing TD Waterhouse in 2006. Marlene worked as a teacher.
He acquired his bachelor’s degree as well as his MBA from the University of Chicago.
Ricketts and his siblings, Tom, Laura, and Todd, all went to Omaha’s Westside High School, where Ricketts graduated in 1982.
He earned a BA in biology from the University of Chicago in 1986 and an MBA in marketing and finance from the University of Chicago in 1991.
Ricketts returned to Omaha after finishing graduate school. For a year, he worked for the Union Pacific Railroad, then as a salesperson for a Chicago environmental consultant.
In 1993, he began working for his father’s firm, starting in the call center for a few months before being promoted to a series of senior roles, eventually becoming the company’s chief operating officer during his father’s stint as CEO. He indicated in a 2006 report that his net worth was between $45 million and $50 million.
