Petty has a good reputation all around South Carolina. Under Lou Holtz, he played quarterback for three years, starting each and every game. With 5,656 career attempts, he finished ninth all-time in throwing yards for South Carolina.

In 2001 and 2002, the quarterback led his team to back-to-back amazing Outback Bowl victories over Ohio State. Additionally, he was a nominee for the coveted Johnny Unitas award, which is presented to the best quarterback in the country. The news of his sudden death must have devastated his supporters.

Phil Petty obtained his high school graduation from Boiling Springs High School. The committed football player represented South Carolina from 1998 to 2001. The football player won the Most Valuable Player award at the 2002 Outback Bowl after completing 227 passes for 227 yards. In that year’s 31-28 victory over the Buckeyes, he scored.

In the years following his career, he worked as a football coach. In 2003, he began his position as the offensive coordinator at Columbia’s Hammond School. Phil Petty was one of South Carolina’s most illustrious quarterbacks in history. He passed away on Wednesday, July 20, 2022, when he was only 43 years old.
