McMillan, a former five-star prospect, played college football for three years at Ohio State before electing to pursue a career in professional football.
The Miami Dolphins used the 54th overall pick in the 2017 draft to select him. He was considered a top off-the-ball prospect.
McMillan tore his ACL in the Dolphins’ preseason opener, forcing him to miss the whole rookie season. He came back the following year, though, and made an immediate contribution to the defense.
McMillan was the Dolphins’ starting strong safety for 16 games in 2018, and he was second on the team in tackles and forced fumbles.
In spite of his early success, he was never able to replicate it; when a change in Miami’s coaching staff reduced his playing time the following season, and in August 2020 he was traded to the Las Vegas Raiders.
McMillan spent 16 games (primarily on special teams) with his new squad before signing with the Patriots the following year (2021). So far in his NFL career, he has played in 45 games.
In September of last year, the Patriots modified McMillan’s deal to keep him under contract through the 2021 season. This means that he is officially a member of the squad and will count against the wage cap at a Top-51 level (1.06 million dollars).
The total value of the contract is $965,000, of which $100,000 is a guarantee, plus $180,000 in per-game bonuses and a $50,000 roster bonus, neither of which are expected to be earned.
