Raisel Iglesias is a professional baseball pitcher from Cuba who now pitches for the Los Angeles Angels of Major League Baseball. He formerly played for the Cincinnati Reds in Major League Baseball.
Iglesias played in the Cuban National Series for Isla de la Juventud and for the Cuban national baseball team in the 2013 World Baseball Classic and the 2013 World Port Tournament.
Iglesias attempted to flee Cuba in September 2013. He took refuge in the highlands of Isla de la Juventud, but was apprehended and imprisoned.
Iglesias successfully defected from Cuba in November of the same year. In December 2013, he performed an open tryout in Mexico, where he established his residency.
Iglesias signed a seven-year, $27 million contract with the Cincinnati Reds on June 27, 2014. When he landed in the United States on August 12, the Reds officially added him to their 40-man roster.
The Reds assessed Iglesias as a starting pitcher during spring training in 2015. He made his MLB debut on April 12 after opening the season in the Reds’ Opening Day starting rotation.
He missed 18 games, 16 of which he started, due to a couple of stays on the disabled list. He had a 3–7 record with 104 strikeouts.
After starting the season in the rotation, Iglesias was shifted to the bullpen the next season. Iglesias pitched for the Reds as a setup man and closer, recording six saves in 37 games.
In 2019, Iglesias began the season as the Reds’ closer and finished with a 4.16 ERA and career highs in saves (34) and appearances (68).
Iglesias secured his 100th MLB save against the Brewers on August 8, 2020. Iglesias had a 4-3 record in 2020, a 2.74 ERA, and 31 strikeouts in 23.0 innings of work.
