Rishi Sunak is a British politician who was Chancellor of the Exchequer from 2020 to 2022 after serving as Chief Secretary to the Treasury from 2019 to 2020.
He has served as the Member of Parliament for Richmond since 2015.
The son of Indian immigrants from East Africa, Sunak grew up in Southampton whiles attending Winchester College. He went on to study philosophy, politics, and economics at Oxford’s Lincoln College before earning an MBA from Stanford University as a Fulbright Scholar.
He fell in love with Akshata Murty, the N. R. Narayana Murthy’s daughter, the Indian billionaire businessman who founded Infosys, while studying at Stanford.
Following graduation, he worked for Goldman Sachs before becoming a partner at the hedge fund firms The Children’s Investment Fund Management and Theleme Partners.
He was elected as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Local Government in Theresa May’s second government in 2015 for Richmond (Yorks).
He supported May’s Brexit withdrawal agreement three times. Sunak supported Boris Johnson’s campaign for Conservative leader after May resigned.
Sunak was appointed Chief Secretary to the Treasury by Johnson after he was elected and appointed Prime Minister. Sunak took over as Chancellor of the Exchequer after Sajid Javid resigned in February 2020.
