Samuel Thomas Hunter Clay is an American professional baseball pitcher who currently plays for the Washington Nationals of Major League Baseball. Clay was born on June 21, 1993, in the United States.
He made his MLB debut in 2021. Clay received his high school education at Buford High School, located in Buford, Georgia.
He attended the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he was a member of the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets baseball team and participated in collegiate baseball.
Clay was taken by the Minnesota Twins in the fourth round of the 2014 Major League Baseball draft. At the time of his selection, Clay was a draft-eligible sophomore.
Since 2014, Clay has been a member of the Twins’ minor league system. A non-roster invitee for Minnesota’s 60-man player pool in 2020, he worked out at CHS Field in St. Paul’s alternate training facility.
During the 2020 season, Clay became a minor league free agent after the Twins failed to sign him to their major league roster.
For the first time in his professional career, the Washington Nationals announced on November 18, 2020, that Clay had been signed to a big-league contract, putting him on the team.
Clay was called up to the major leagues for the first time on April 6, 2021. The next day, he made his MLB debut, pitching a shutout inning for the Atlanta Braves.
