Born in San Mateo, California, USA, Sean Payton is an American football coach and former player who is currently the head coach for the New Orleans Saints of the National Football League (NFL). He coached them from 2006-2011, and from 2013 to the present. According to reports, he would have continued acting as their coach if not for the 1-year suspension thrown on him by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell as a result of what was widely dubbed “Bountygate.”
On March 21, 2012, Payton was suspended for the whole 2012 NFL season, initially set to produce results April 1, 2012, because of his supposed association in the New Orleans Saints bounty scandal, under which “bounties” were purportedly paid for contact that would “take out” designated players in rival groups.

Payton’s coaching career began as the offensive assistant for San Diego State University and had several assistant coaching positions on college and NFL teams before being named as the tenth full-time coach in Saints history.
He was the quarterbacks’ coach for Philadelphia Eagles from 1997 to 1998. Payton was appointed as the quarterbacks’ coach for the New York Giants in 1999 and was promoted to the role of offensive coordinator in 2000.
With the Dallas Cowboys, Sean Payton was hired as an assistant head coach and a quarterbacks coach in 2003 under coach Quincy Carter, Vinny Testaverde, and Drew Bledsoe.
