As a defensive tackle with the New York Jets of the National Football League, Sheldon Rankins participates in professional American football. He is 1.88 m tall and 138 kg in weight. In Covington, Georgia, he went to Eastside High School. He made a commitment to play college football at the University of Louisville. From 2012 to 2015, he was a member of the University of Louisville’s Louisville Cardinals football team.
He had 22 tackles and four sacks in his freshman and sophomore seasons, largely as a backup. Rankins had 53 tackles, eight sacks, and two interceptions in 2014 as a junior while starting all 13 games. He recorded 58 tackles as a senior in 2015, six sacks, and a touchdown on a fumble return.
Rankins was selected by the New Orleans Saints with the 12th overall pick on April 28, 2016, during the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft. His four-year, $12.8 million deal with the Saints was finalized on May 9, 2016. Rankins’ fifth-year option was exercised by the Saints in April 2019. On December 11, 2019, he suffered an ankle injury and was put on injured reserve.

He played in 10 games and finished the year with 10 tackles and 2 sacks. He was put on injured reserve in November 2020 due to a knee injury. In December 2020, he was made active. He committed to the New York Jets in March 2021, agreeing to a two-year, $17 million deal.
