Who is Shinzo Abe’s wife Akie Abe?

Akie Abe is a Japanese radio DJ and the wife of politician Shinzo Abe, who served as Prime Minister of Japan from 2006 to 2007 and again from 2012 to 2020.

Akie Matsuzaki is a socialite who was born in Japan. Her father was the previous president of Morinaga & Co., one of Japan’s major confectionery enterprises.

She attended Sacred Heart School in Tokyo (or Seishin Joshi Gakuin), a Roman Catholic private elementary through high school, before graduating from Sacred Heart Professional Training College.

Before marrying Shinzo Abe in 1987, Abe worked for Dentsu Inc., the world’s largest advertising agency. The couple has no children as a result of unsuccessful fertility treatments earlier in their marriage.

Abe worked as a radio disc jockey in Shimonoseki, her husband’s hometown, in the late 1990s. She was well-known in the broadcasting industry as “Akky.”

Following her husband’s first term as Prime Minister, she opened an organic izakaya in Tokyo’s Kanda district but was not involved in management at the urging of her mother-in-law.

In March 2011, she graduated with a master’s degree in Social Design Studies from Rikkyo University.

Abe was the first Japanese prime minister’s spouse to actively use social media and was particularly active on Facebook and Instagram, but she dramatically reduced her social media activities and changed the style of her posts in the aftermath of the Moritomo Gakuen scandal.
