Shireen Abu Akleh was a Palestinian-American journalist who lived from January 3, 1971, until May 11, 2022. She was slain on May 11, 2022, while reporting an Israeli Defense Forces operation on Jenin in the occupied West Bank.
Radio Monte Carlo and Voice of Palestine both hired Abu Akleh as a journalist. She also did work for UNRWA, the Amman Satellite Channel, and MIFTAH. She started working for Al Jazeera in 1997 and quickly rose to prominence as a correspondent on the Arabic-language channel.
She resided and worked in East Jerusalem, where she covered Israeli politics as well as key Palestinian events like the Second Intifada. She frequently covered Palestinians murdered by Israeli soldiers during their funerals. Abu Akleh remained with Al Jazeera until her death in 2022 at the hands of Israeli soldiers.

The Palestinian Health Ministry confirmed on May 11, 2022, that Abu Akleh had been shot and killed by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) while reporting on IDF incursions in Jenin.
According to the Israeli military, Abu Akleh was present for a raid that was intended to apprehend “terror suspects.” During the IDF’s operation, Abu Akleh was shot in the head and sent to Ibn Sina Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
She has reached the age of 51. An additional Palestinian journalist, Ali Samodi of the Al-Quds newspaper, was wounded in the back but survived; two other Palestinians were taken to a hospital in moderate condition.
