Sonny Gray is an American professional baseball pitcher for the Minnesota Twins of Major League Baseball (MLB). He previously played for the Oakland Athletics, New York Yankees, and Cincinnati Reds.
He was honored as the Freshman of the Year in District 9AAA for his work as a pitcher and left fielder during his freshman year. As a sophomore, he was plagued by ailments and only participated in a fraction of the season’s games as a result.
He took his team all the way to the state tournament in 2007 as a junior, compiling an 11–2 win-loss record and a 0.95 earned run average in the process (ERA).
As a result of this, he was selected to participate in the AFLAC All-American High School Baseball Classic, and he was also considered for the National Player of the Year award (which Tim Melville ultimately won). He finished his senior year with a record of 4–0 and an earned run average of 0.79. He was playing in a district game in April 2008 when he suffered an injury that put an end to his season.
In his final two years at Smyrna, he hit better than.500 with his bat, but he chose to focus on his pitching career in college despite his success at the plate.
In addition to his prowess on the mound, he also excelled at the position of quarterback for Smyrna’s football team, where he led the club to back-to-back 5A state championships in 2006 and 2007.
As a result of his outstanding performance in all aspects of athletics, The Tennessean recognized him as the Gatorade Player of the Year in both 2007 and 2008.
