Johnson took part in the football program at Sheldon High School, which was located in Sacramento, California.
Due to the extraordinary level of his talent, he was promoted to the varsity team of his school when he was only a sophomore, which is one year earlier than the norm. Later on, he would become the first player ever selected from the university for the NFL Draft.
After graduating from high school, Johnson had only one collegiate football position offer, and he decided to accept Weber State’s offer because it was the only one.
At Weber State, Johnson made his collegiate debut in five games as a freshman and went on to start every game after that. The following year, as a junior, he tied the mark that he had established the previous year as a sophomore when he intercepted 12 passes and set a new school record.
He finished his senior year in 2017 with a total of three interceptions, nine pass breakups, and 49 tackles, which earned him the Big Sky Defensive Player of the Year award as well as First Time All-American honors from a consensus of publications.
