John Thomas Hatch is a Major League Baseball pitcher who currently pitches for the Toronto Blue Jays.
Hatch went to Jenks High School, which is located in Jenks, Oklahoma. He went 7–2 with a 1.60 ERA as a junior.
He was not selected in the 2013 MLB draft out of high school, so he enrolled at Oklahoma State University and pitched for the Cowboys.
He went to school for accountancy. He was a member of the Bourne Braves of the Cape Cod Baseball League in the summer of 2014.
In 2015, he was unable to pitch due to a sprained ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow, which did not necessitate surgery.
In 2016, he pitched heavily as Oklahoma State advanced to the College World Series. Hatch won the Big 12 Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Year Award in 2016 after going 9–3 with a 2.14 ERA in 19 starts.
The Chicago Cubs selected Hatch in the third round of the 2016 MLB draft, with the 104th overall pick. He received a $573,900 signing bonus when he joined the Cubs.
After signing, he did not pitch in 2016. He made his professional debut in 2017 with the Class A-Advanced Carolina League’s Myrtle Beach Pelicans, earning a 5–11 record with a 4.04 ERA in 26 starts.
Hatch pitched for the Tennessee Smokies of the Southern League’s Class AA division, earning Southern League All-Star honors and posting an 8-6 record with a 3.82 ERA in 26 appearances.
