Thomas was born on September 29, 1994, in Tulsa, Oklahoma in the United States of America. He had his amateur baseball career at Jenks High School in Oklahoma and at the Oklahoma State University where he played college baseball for the Oklahoma State Cowboys. He was an accounting student at the University.
Thomas played collegiate summer baseball with the Bourne Braves of the Cape Cod Baseball League. During the 2016 MLB draft, the Chicago Cubs drafted him in the third round of the draft. He signed with the Cubs and was paid $573,900 as a signing bonus.
He began his professional career in 2017 after he was assigned to play with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans of the Class A-Advanced Carolina League. In 2018, Thomas was made to spend the season with the Tennessee Smokies of the Class AA Southern League where he was named Southern League All-Star.
