Thomas Szapucki fired two wild pitches that rebounded back in his way, as well as two delicious pitches that might not have landed at all.
Szapucki made an odd MLB debut, coming out of the bullpen with a nine-run hole in the fourth inning and recording 11 outs but failing to pull the Mets over the finish line in a 20-2 loss to the Braves.
A game that had been years in the making for the organization’s No. 10-ranked prospect became a game that almost everyone else would like to forget as soon as possible.
When Szapucki’s first delivery was sliced back to the mound, his butterflies had barely calmed. He looked to the third base line, where a frozen Dansby Swanson would have been trapped in a rundown, but threw to first, allowing Swanson to score.
Szapucki’s second pitch sailed past catcher James McCann but rebounded back to home plate off the stone backstop.
It wasn’t considered a wild pitch because no runners advanced.
It felt like something that happened once a year, but Szapucki did it again later in the inning, this time leveraging the friendly bounce to get the third out of the inning on the base paths.
