Born in Jerusalem in 1971, Abu Akleh, who was a Christian, initially studied architecture before switching to journalism at Yarmouk University in Jordan.
After graduating, she returned to Palestine and worked for several media outlets, including Voice of Palestine Radio and the Amman Satellite Channel.
She joined Al Jazeera Media Network a year after it was launched in 1996, as one of the Qatar-based Arabic-language network’s first field correspondents and gained fame for her coverage of the second Palestinian Intifada in 2000.
From the Gaza wars of 2008, 2009, 2012, 2014, and 2021 to the audacious jailbreak of six Palestinians who left a maximum-security prison in northern Israel in September, Abu Akleh covered it all as a television journalist.
0She also reported on regional issues, such as the 2006 Lebanon war.
Hatuqa remembers Israeli troops “mimicking her, shouting her famous ending lines from a bullhorn: Shireen Abu Akleh, Al Jazeera, Ramallah” during the second Intifada.
Abu Akleh, on the other hand, was much more than Al Jazeera’s Palestinian face to her pals.
When Abu Akleh was assassinated, she was on assignment in the occupied West Bank city of Jenin, covering Israeli raids on a refugee camp.
She was hit in the head while wearing a blue flak jacket with the word “PRESS” clearly written on it.
