Toru Takahashi, a picture editor and photographer for The Associated Press stationed in Tokyo, passed away recently. During his lengthy career, Mr. Takahashi was known for methodically shooting photographs and imparting his extensive expertise to his fellow employees. He was 62.
According to his wife, Mieko Takahashi, Takahashi, who had been undergoing treatment for lung cancer, passed away on Friday, just a few days after coming home from the hospital.
His hometown is Kumamoto, which is located in the southern part of Japan. He joined the Associated Press in Tokyo as an editing assistant and is responsible for running errands for photographers and writers.
He was taught English as well as photography by more senior members of the crew, and as a result, he was finally given a position editing and shooting images. When he wasn’t on a job,
Takahashi was known for his dry sense of humour and his obsessive attention to detail, both of which he displayed while preparing the photographs of his colleagues for publication.
The AP would not regret sending Takahashi to cover a Formula One event in central Japan at the beginning of his career. He covered a wide range of big international events over his 36-year tenure at the AP, including Hong Kong’s 1997 reversion to China,
the 2002 South Korean presidential election, the 2000 and 2008 Olympic Games, and seven F1 races, both as an editor and a photographer.
