Tova Traesnaes Borgnine was an American businesswoman of Norwegian descent. She was the widow of Hollywood actor Ernest Borgnine and the founder of Beauty by Tova cosmetics.
Tova studied acting in Manhattan, but she also acquired a passion for cosmetics application. She launched a cosmetics facility after marrying a New Jersey businessman in 1965.
When her marriage fell apart, she relocated her company to Las Vegas to be closer to her mother.
Tova discovered a cactus-based face cream created from a Mexican family’s formula in Las Vegas in 1975 and purchased worldwide distribution rights.
Her company, then known as Tova9, had revenues of almost $500,000 in 1977, and approximately $2 million in 1981. With Elaine Trebek, she published The Tova Difference: A Promise of Lasting Beauty in 1984.
Tova Signature, her perfume, has been in production since 1983 and has been available on QVC since 1990.
Her headquarters in Beverly Hills, California, and factory in nearby Arcadia had 47 employees by 1984. She had 65 skincare items and 80 staff by 1987.
