Uwe Seeler, an HSV legend, has died. Former Hamburger SV player (1953-1972) and president (1995-1998) died at 85, surrounded by his family. Uwe Seeler leaves behind his wife Ilka, three daughters, and seven grandchildren.
Seeler was born on 5 November 1936 and passed away today 21 July 2022. He was a German footballer and referee.
He was a prolific striker for Hamburger SV and played 72 times for West Germany’s national team. Seeler was named one of FIFA’s 125 greatest living players by Pelé in 2004.
He is regarded as one of the greatest players in German football history. During his time with the club, he made an incredible 476 appearances and scored 404 goals.
Between 1953 and 1970, he also played for the German national team, then West Germany, at both the Under-18 and Senior levels. Uwe Seeler, 85, died today at his home in Norderstedt, Germany.
He was the first football player to be awarded the Federal Republic of Germany’s Great Order of Merit. Levin Oztunali, his grandson, is also a professional footballer.
