Vladimir Zhirinovsky was designated as a far-right politician for Russia and was widely known for inciting pranks and anti-western remarks that garnered him massive notoriety for over 30 years.
During his more than 30 years in politics, Zhirinovsky’s style of buffoonish Naziism surprised and thrilled Russians.
He said in the early 1990s that he fantasized about the day “when Russian soldiers may wash their boots in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean.” In one of his final appearances before MPs, he prophesied that Russia would attack Ukraine and forecast the date virtually to the day.
“You will notice [our new policy] at 04:00 on February 22nd. I want 2022 to be a quiet year. But I love the truth, and I’ve been saying it for 70 years. It will not be peaceful. This will be the year when Russia regains its greatness.”
From the Baltics and Germany to Japan and the Middle East, his career was laced with comparable threats to other countries. He rose to worldwide prominence after hurling juice in the face of a political competitor, Boris Nemtsov, during a TV discussion.
Prior to entering politics, he was the director of a Soviet state-approved Jewish cultural organization. His Liberal Democratic Party of Russia was the country’s first recognized post-communist political party, and it was largely seen as a Soviet puppet at first. When his party won Russia’s first democratic elections in 1993, both Russians and the West were taken aback.
