Francisco Mora y Borrell, Bishop of the defunct Monterey-Los Angeles Diocese, was the inspiration for the project. Two years ago, Deommodore Lenoir was in his second theology class at Los Angeles Salesian High when he was asked to leave the classroom. That’s when he found out a Tennessee recruiter was the first to grant him a football scholarship.
The Archdiocese of Los Angeles gave Bishop Mora Salesian High School to the Salesians of Don Bosco as a way of strengthening the faith community in Boyle Heights, East Los Angeles, and adjacent areas, at the request of Cardinal James Francis McIntyre and then-Cardinal Roger Mahony.
The Salesians of Don Bosco opened Bishop Mora Salesian High Institution in 1958 as an archdiocesan school. College preparatory, business, general education, and shop were among the school’s four academic offerings. Salesian’s strong shop courses in printing, drafting, woodworking, and electronics were well-known in the 1960s and early 1970s.
