Mayfield grew up a die-hard Sooner fan who went to many of the Sooners’ games as a kid. James did not play football in college, but his father did for the University of Houston for three years.

The Cleveland Browns selected him in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft. When Mayfield onto the field for the first time, he halted a 19-game losing streak for the Browns and established a rookie quarterback record for touchdown passes.

In 2020, he guided the Browns to their first postseason berth and victory since 1994, making it his most successful season to date. However, Mayfield was traded to the Panthers in 2022 due to inconsistency and a disagreement with Browns’ management.
