Jhonathan Diaz, the starting pitcher for the Bees, earned PCL Pitcher of the Week honors for his eight shutout innings last week.
In a 2-0 Bees win on April 28, Diaz spun a wonderful goal.
Round Rock’s only hits against Diaz were single in the first inning and a hit-by a pitch in the second. This was his fourth start of the season.
It was Diaz’s 17th straight complete-game shutout before an error ended the streak in the bottom of the seventh.
At the end of eight innings, Diaz threw an efficient 92 pitches with seven strikeouts and one walk without giving up any hits.
Zack Weiss recorded his first save of the season with a flawless ninth-inning performance.
It was Diaz’s second win in two games this season.
First start without a walk and second quality start, the first of which came on April 14 when he faced the Las Vegas Aviators.
After five seasons in the Boston Red Sox organization’s minor league system, Diaz became a free agency in 2020 and signed with the Angels as a minor league signing.
With the Angels in 2021, he made his MLB debut, appearing in three games with two starts. Diaz battled with control and walked seven batters in 13 innings with the big league team.
Diaz has been a bright spot in the starting rotation for Salt Lake in 2022. Despite allowing only 12 hits and five runs, Diaz has a 1.96 earned run average.
Second, on the team behind Cesar Valdez, Diaz is the only starter allowing less than one walk or hit per inning in 2022.
