Joan is 1.88m tall and was born on August 12, 1998, in Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic. He had his non-professional baseball career in his birth town. In 2016, he was an international free agent by the Washington Nationals.

He signed with them and began playing for the team. He was assigned to play with the Dominican Summer League Nationals in 2017 where he made his professional debut. He spent the 2018 season playing for both the GCL Nationals and the Auburn Doubledays.
