Since 2021, Penelope Mary Mordaunt FRSA, a British politician, has served as the minister of state for trade policy. She has served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Portsmouth North since 2010 and is a Conservative.
She served as Theresa May’s Secretary of State for International Development from 2017 until 2019. She served as Theresa May’s Secretary of State for Defense from May until July 2019.
Mordaunt studied philosophy at the University of Reading before working in public relations. She participated in the 2000 and 2004 George W. Bush presidential campaigns and served in leadership roles for the Conservative Party under John Major and William Hague.
In May 2010, Mordaunt won a seat in the House of Commons. She held the position of Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Decentralization from 2014 to 2015 under David Cameron’s coalition government.
After the 2015 general election, Cameron promoted her to Minister of State for the Armed Forces, the first woman to hold the post. Mordaunt supported Brexit in the 2016 referendum on EU membership.
