“Phil” Phidarian Mathis is a defensive tackle for the Washington Commanders of the NFL. Mathis entered our world on April 26, 1998.
He played college football in Alabama before being picked by the Commanders in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft. On April 26, 1998, Mathis entered the world in the little Louisiana town of Wisner.
He started his high school career in Franklin Parish, LA, at Franklin Parish High School, but transferred to Neville High School in Monroe, LA, following his sophomore year.
As a senior, he ended the season with 41 tackles and seven sacks. Despite receiving scholarship offers from LSU and TCU, four-star recruit Mathis opted to play collegiate football for the Crimson Tide.
The prestige of Alabama was a factor in Mathis’s choice. The Washington Commanders picked Mathis, who was available in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft,
at pick number 47 overall. Mathis was a true freshman at Alabama when he was given a redshirt and later named to the SEC’s All-Freshman team.
His 31 tackles, five tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, and forced fumble were major factors in the Crimson Tide’s 2021 College Football Playoff National Championship victory.
Mathis was placed on injured reserve after tearing a meniscus in his left knee in his first NFL game.
