Thomas Townsend was born on November 12, 1996, and currently plays for the National Football League’s Kansas City Chiefs (NFL). He attended William R. Boone High School in Orlando, Florida, during his junior and senior years of high school.
He attended the University of Tennessee for his freshman year before transferring to the University of Florida for his sophomore year. Johnny, his brother, is also a professional punter and a former University of Florida student. On December 26, 2021, Johnny took over as their punter for the Chiefs game but is now a free agent.
He had two 65-yard punts against the New England Patriots in the fourth game of his rookie season in 2020. He finished with an average of 60.8 yards per punt, a Chiefs franchise record for punt average in a game (minimum four tries), and a net average of 47.8 yards. On November 1, he completed his first professional pass against the New York Jets on a fake punt. The completion covered 13 yards for a first down.
Townsend punted six times in Week 15 against the New Orleans Saints, three inside the 20-yard line with a long of 61 yards, earning him AFC Special Teams Player of the Week honors. Overall, Townsend punted 52 times for 2,339 net yards and a 44.98 average in 2020. He was named to the Pro Football Writers Association’s All-Rookie team during his rookie season.
