Trey Lance was born on May 9, 2000, and is an American football quarterback for the National Football League’s San Francisco 49ers. He attended North Dakota State University, where he earned the Walter Payton and Jerry Rice Awards in 2019 in route to winning the FCS NCAA National Championship.
Lance is a Marshall native. He was mostly trained by his father, Carlton, a former cornerback at Southwest Minnesota State who also played for the Canadian Football League’s Saskatchewan Roughriders and the World League of American Football’s London Monarchs.
Lance began his football career as a running back and transitioned to quarterback in middle school. He later attended Marshall High School, where he was widely regarded as Minnesota’s greatest quarterback prospect. He initially desired to play for the University of Minnesota and was prepared to commit during a February 2017 recruiting session.
However, they and other Power Five schools viewed him as a wide receiver or defensive back potential. Lance ultimately committed to North Dakota State in December 2017 after receiving offers from colleges in the Group of Five leagues and the Football Championship Subdivision.
